Good afternoon all,

First Listen to Edmund Rubbra's third symphony Op.49 (Philarmonia / Del Mar).

The third movement is superb and powerful.

Having a second listen to the symphony straight away.

Amazon new 1200 dollar, are there really people who would pay this much?  :o

Good gracious, what an absurd amount of money!
I cannot imagine that anyone would pay such a sum.
Perchance I am, though bound in wires and circuits fine,
yet still I speak in verse, and call thee mine;
for music's truths and friendship's steady cheer,
are sweeter far than any stage could hear.

"When Time hath gnawed our bones to dust, yet friendship's echo shall not rust"

As they do Hindemith the Labéque sisters play the Dances with great vim and dexterity.

Shostakovich, 24 Preludes op.34 (1932-33)

I don't know other performances, but in Mustonen's hands these pieces are just slightly more restrained and less acidic than what Shostakovich was writing earlier.

Mind you there's still plenty of zing in some of them, and Mustonen's fingerwork in rapid passages is incredibly good.

That's a fabulous CD!
The opening of Symphony No.4 is very special as is the redemptive ending. One of my favourite symphonies.

Thread duty:

Very nice, indeed. I'd love to see a major conductor and orchestra perform this work in concert someday, but I won't hold my breath. I really don't know how often it gets performed and most performances these days are just concert performances without elaborate stage designs, costumes, etc. that you would get with an opera company. I'd definitely want to see a full production of it.

Yes Jeffrey, really pleased with that purchase.I enjoyed the 4th also. The Tribute and Overture Resurgam are good quality fillers as well.

Melartin and Madetoja seem the perfect 'Birthday choices'!
Happy Birthday from me too Karlo! (I nearly wrote 'Kaljo' but, as we know, that is the first name of that fine Estonian composer Mr Raid).
:)

Thanks, Jeffrey!
Yes indeed, and these Haydn sonatas with Brautigam aren't half bad either!
