Réminiscences for orchestra, Serenade for strings and winds, and 2 concertos (piano, bassoon). Dietrich Erdmann (1917-2009, not to be confused with his namesake Eduard, 1896-1958) composed in a style reminiscent of Hindemith and Genzmer. From the on-line Dictionary of composers we read « Dietrich Erdmann was influenced by New Objectivity, Neo-Baroque and Neo-Classicism. Beside the many musical fashions since the 1920's and the many compositional techniques of the avant-garde, he developed a modern music style with rich tone colors and unusual instrumentations« . This is the 3rd disc of his music I've listened to and it's just as good as the other two. I discovered this composer exactly a year ago and have been impressed by the fluency of his writing. Like Hindemith and Genzmer before him, Erdmann doesn't attempt to demonstrate, promote or refute any technique or aesthetic. This is 'serious' music I listen to for sheer enjoyment. I have a 4th disc of Erdmann's in the pile.

Okay, Dave. Just a follow-up to my previous post, it looks like this is just an editing program and that's it. I'm talking about when I insert a CD into my CD drive, the metadata appears as it gets its information from Gracenote. My question is there another website I designate where I get a CD's metadata from instead of the Gracenote database? My whole point in wondering is I want to do as little editing as possible. Thanks!

OK - John - let us know what you figure out - I usually just re-tag and/or add pics - Dave :)

Possibly the best Pathétique I've heard. The Tempest and Mondschein sonatas are very good, sometimes arresting, but not on that exalted level. Very impressive, but still works in progress. The piano sound (a Bösendorfer) is magnificent.

Well, one cannot bypass Gracenote, so it looks like if a CD comes up with no information (i. e. metadata), I'll have to enter it manually. :-\

spotted horses reminded me that it has been too long since I listened to this

I'm sure that back when I first listened to this, I said I loved it, and I'm loving it all over again.

I don't really know where to post this question since most of the computer threads are buried in the forum and I'm simply too lazy to look, but is there a way you can change where you get a CD's metadata from? I'm using an Apple Macbook Pro and use their "Music" app for ripping CDs. Thanks to any who can help.

Yes when I used dBpoweramp you could select from several different choices.  Still frequently required retagging anyway though, you know how it is.

Thread duty:

Beethoven's 4th Barenboim.  I think his cycle is fairly unpopular on this forum, but it is one of my favorites!

I'll have to try the actual music, but I love the cover!

If you like the cover art, the music will be right up your alley I suspect.

+1 for the epic Piano Quintet, of course! I tried the SQ no. 3 a while back and found it quite disappointing compared to the quintet, but maybe that's just me.

In the SQ 3 I detected slight traces of Second Viennese School. I find that work sensuous, I like the harmonic language particularly.

Ah yes, I recall you mentioning dBpoweramp before. Thanks for the reminder.

Too many meetings at work today! Only had time for one disc:

Richard Arnell
Piano Concerto
Symphony no. 2
Royal Scottish National Orchestra
Martin Yates

(on Qobuz)

Each piece had its moments - Arnell certainly knows how to write for the orchestra, particularly the brass! Pleasant enough music, although I found it a little faceless. I was reminded of George Lloyd in spots, William Walton in others, though without their distinctive qualities.
So much great music, so little time...

Pizzetti: Preludio a un altro giorno

I was reminded of Rubbra's Resurgam Overture when I heard it the other day. Forceful, heroic, somewhat moving work.

Bridge: Dance Rhapsody

Glittering performance and recording. What an energetic piece of music. It has to be one of his most uplifting and marvelously scored pieces.

Pizzetti is one of my least favorites from that particular generation of Italian composers, but that's a nice disc. As for Bridge, I never could get into his orchestral works that much --- they seemed rather diffuse to me. I do like his chamber works, however.

Re: Nielsen's Maskarade

I just wanted to let you know that I own two recordings of Nielsen's comic opera, Maskarade:

I ended up going with the Schønwandt when I was deciding on what recording I wanted to rip to one of my hard drives (in which, I use for playback purposes). A good choice? I believe I remember you saying you liked this one a lot. Also, what do you think of Schønwandt's Nielsen symphony cycle on Dacapo? I don't think I need to rip it as I have several of them ripped already: Blomstedt (Decca), Gilbert, Oramo and half cycles from Chung and Bernstein.
