I can pronounce this in Romanian alright, I can even write it down in Romanian. Please, do the same in English --- if you can, that is.  :D

The only people more nuts than those asking these prices are those who pay them.  ;D

In general people aren't asking. Computer algorithms are.

Martinu: The Epic of Gilgamesh. Sung in Czech with an English narration. This is one of my favourite works by Martinu:
"Courage is going from failure to failure without losing enthusiasm" (Churchill).

'The test of a work of art is, in the end, our affection for it, not our ability to explain why it is good' (Stanley Kubrick).

Delius; Brigg Fair - BBC SO - Sir Andrew Davis
Vaughan Williams: On Wenlock Edge - Andrew Kennedy (tenor), Royal String Quartet, Simon Crawford-Phillips (piano)
Butterworth: Six Songs from "A Shropshire Lad" - Jonathan Lemalu (baritone), Ian Burnside (piano)
Finzi: Let Us Garlands Bring - Jonatan Lemalu (baritone), BBC SO - Jac Van Steen

Another nice disc from BBC Music Magazine. Good to have both the Vaughan Wiliams and Butterworth settings of some of the Housman poems on one disc. A very enjoyable disc, though I have a better version of the Vaughan Williams, sung by Philip Langridge.

Okay, but then again how does a computer algorithm come up with asking exactly $1,399.99? Why not $1,400, or $1,350? As far as I know, computer algorithms do just that, ie round up/down the amount.

It's an old retail trick.

1.99 hits the brain as significantly less than 2.00.

25% off 10.00 makes people think they are getting a bargain even when a neighboring store has the same item labelled regular price 7.50.

Sometimes it may actually result in paying less in taxes, too.

Significantly less?  :o

Your brain, maybe. Certainly not mine.

Yes, it's a favourite work of mine. The narration only really works in concert, though. Thankfully, it can largely be skipped at home.

I'm not an elitist, Jeffrey (or should I say Jephraim?). I'm sure the average consumer knows better than confusing $1.99 with a significant reduction from $2.00.

The technical term is psychological pricing.

Kudos to you, then. I find it a formless hodgepodge far surpassing even that formless hodgepodge called Romeo et Juliette;D

Truth be told, Berlioz is far from being a favorite composer of mine, to put it mildly. Too much histrionics for my taste.  ;)

But, of course, we are still friends in my book.  8)

Okay. I'm still unconvinced that a moderately sane person perceives $1.99 as a significantly lower price than $2.00.

Not even his melodies? They're as good as Debussy's. Given the chronology he might be considered the (or at least a) founder of the French art-song tradition.

I love his melodies. I love L'enfance du Christ. I love Symphonie fantastique.
