I teach a student that collects audio cassettes.  Now we just have to wait for the return of eight track!

My 17 year old nephew has an old soul.  He probably knows more about film and film history than I dare say, most people! He is interested in pursuing a career in film, and I certainly hope he does.

He also collects audio cassettes, DVDs and VHS of films.  :)

I love discussing film with him and asking him "What about this director? Any recommendations?".  It is thrilling for me, and I am sure he enjoys educating his uncle.  8) He loves old films equally to modern, foreign films.  The whole gamut.

My dad's Caddie had an 8-track player in it. Those things would get so tangled up and often overheat!

What a good uncle you are!  :)

I had some students of mine in class once, maybe around 16 years old, debating the classic status of Cool Hand Luke and whether or not it was Paul Newman's best film. At the time, I hadn't even seen that movie.

Only if quadrophonic recordings return with it.

I haven't heard an eight track since ~1982, when Dr Demento was still on the air locally.  I do, though, still have some cassette tapes at my disposal and a nifty Sears tape recorder/player.  Perhaps I should buy a fancy, 80s-audiophile-approved tape deck in anticipation of the return of the format.  Man, get that pristine vinyl, then record it to cassette for portability and longevity of the source.  Good stuff.

People tend to be overzealous at their new job, especially when it deals with exercising authority.  ;D

IMO there was nothing in that thread that warranted its being locked.

I support the moderator's decision and it is temporary as a cooling period mechanism.  :)

My default view is Fed bashing is for weaklings. Still, you know what they say about stopped clocks, so this might help:

    Yeow!

Banks invest their deposits in short-term bonds, for the most part. But even short-term bonds can have large unrealized losses when interest rates spike until the bonds mature. And bonds that have more interest rate risk are even more susceptible to large losses. All told, banks are now sitting on roughly $600 billion of losses in what are supposed to be among the safest instruments in the world. All because the fed went too far too fast.

The red line on the chart tells the tale.

From the Gray Lady: The Silicon Valley Bank Rescue Just Changed Capitalism

Mr Lowenstein's too long op-ed can be summed up thusly: financial industry capture of the American government is now complete as pretenses of effective regulation have been dropped in favor of formalizing the 2008 crisis response of socializing risk while allowing (encouraging) private sector profit and concentration.  It's all good.

It was surprising to see CNN cover this, but it's great that they did. They broke down the issue and explained it well.

I knew about that issue.  Online dating apps are a mistake.  But also those 20 somethings are surprisingly just completely friendless many times.  Not just no romantic partner, but no social life whatsoever.  Combine that with the almost complete lack of social mobility and high levels of depression that gen Z face and you have a real crisis on your hands.
