My favorite sports movie is Moneyball, probably because of its philosophical themes woven into character portraits.

Quote from: Karl Henning on May 05, 2023, 09:45:03 AMI may or may not actually watch the first at some point. My lack of interest in the sequels is of a truly epic scale.

Wife and I saw Rocky on release in 1976 in Fayetteville (Ft. Bragg, Army Medical Corps - 2 years I owed Uncle Sam after my radiology residency) and have re-watched a number of times (own as an Amazon UHD streamer).

But I was wondering what 'sports-related' films are in my video collection - below a listing of 20 movies dating from 1942 to 2010 of all varieties (added the subject in parentheses for those not familiar w/ any); now I've seen many more over the decades but just have not made purchases - Dave :)

QuoteBreaking Away - 1979 (cycling)
Bull Durham - 1988 (baseball)
Champion - 1949 (boxing)
Cinderella Man - 2005 (boxing)
Color of Money - 1986 (pool)
Gentlemen Jim - 1942 (boxing)
Greatest Game Even Played - 2005 (golf)
Hoosiers - 1986 (basketball)
Hustler, The - 1961 (pool)
Jerry McGuire - 1996 (pro football agent)
National Velvet - 1944 (horse racing)
Pride of the Yankees - 1942 (baseball)
Race - 2016 (track - Olympics)
Raging Bull - 1980 (boxing)
Remember the Titans - 2000 (football)
Rocky - 1976 (boxing)
The Rookie - 2002 (baseball)
Sea Biscuit - 2003 (horse racing)
Secretariat - 2010 (horse racing)
Somebody Up There Likes Me - 1956 (boxing)

What is your favorite horse movie?  Mine is The Black Stallion.  A beautiful, beautiful film with a fantastic score too!

Below the near dozen films (from 1944-2010) in my collection w/ a horse 'emphasis' -  :D

But hard to say as a favorite (depends on the mood) - I've watched all of these multiple times over the years; however, I've probably seen The Electric Horseman the most - love the relationship developed between Redford and Fonda, plus Willie Nelson is in the film and does a lot of the singing on the soundtrack (see second quote).  Dave :)

QuoteBlack Stallion, The - 1979
Electric Horseman, The - 1979
Hidalgo - 2004
Horse Whisperer, The - 1998
Lonely are the Brave - 1962
Man From Snowy Mountain - 1982
National Velvet - 1944
Misty - 1961 (wild horses Virginia)
Red Pony - 1949
Seabiscuit - 2003
Secretariat -2010

QuoteThe musical score to The Electric Horseman was composed by Dave Grusin. In addition to co-starring, Willie Nelson contributed significantly to the film's soundtrack as well, singing five songs including "My Heroes Have Always Been Cowboys", "Midnight Rider," "Mammas Don't Let Your Babies Grow Up to Be Cowboys," "So You Think You're a Cowboy" and "Hands on the Wheel." Coinciding with the film's release, a soundtrack album was released featuring both Nelson's songs and Grusin's score. (Source)

Quote from: SonicMan46 on May 05, 2023, 06:25:49 AMP.S. only saw the movie once on release - one of my least favorite 'sports' film - I'm sure others will disagree?

I used to live very close to the actual Field of Dreams in Dyersville, Iowa, and the locals LOVE the film! It has unusual pacing like many Kevin Costner films, but I enjoy it well enough.

I do like Tin Cup from Kevin Costner as a sports movie. I'm a sucker for golf movies, though, and they often move at the pace of the sport!

I was introduced to Sidney Lumet's film adaptation of Equus (1977) as a young man. Saw it before I saw The Godfather. With either movie, you don't find me hanging around horses now (or moreso, classic Italian mobsters and psychologically disturbed teens!). :-[

My wife loves the Australian wild horse Snowy River movies, even with cheesy dual roles from Kirk Douglas.

My Musical Musings

The Black Stallion is a solid film, with beautiful sequences in a couple of places. Probably my favorite horse film.

As sports films go, Bull Durham and The Natural top my list, though the latter is more " American Myth " than a baseball movie.

Somewhat ot, but pertinent to the " horsing around " above.  8)

Yesterday saw the annual running of the Kentucky Derby. Unfortunately, Mage's 15-1 victory has been overshadowed by the unusually high number of horse deaths leading up to the race.

It has made me nostalgic for the greatest athlete I've ever seen perform: Secretariat, fifty years ago.

Note, I'm pretty sure there's at least one upload of Belmont with superior video. But the call is just as important, and just as memorable:

Another DVD > HD Amazon streamer purchase last night:

The Freshman (1990) w/ Marlon Brando, Matthew Broderick, and others - short summary below; Brando spoofing his 'Godfather' roles; great rapport between the two main stars - Maximilian Schell as the chef and Bert Parks the emcee are also hilarious - ratings generally good: 94%, Rotten Tomatoes; 3*/4* Maltin; 3+*/4* Ebert - the latter's review HERE (w/ some discussion of the negative then retracted Brando comments) - recommended!  Dave :)

P.S. not to be confused w/ the 1925 classic silent film of the same name starring Harold Lloyd, which I've not seen in decades.

QuoteThe Freshman is an American crime comedy film written and directed by Andrew Bergman, and starring Marlon Brando, Matthew Broderick, Bruno Kirby, Penelope Ann Miller, and Frank Whaley. The plot revolves around a young New York film student's entanglement in an illicit business of offering exotic and endangered animals as specialty food items, including his being tasked with delivering a Komodo dragon for this purpose. Any Spencer Tracy-Katharine Hepburn fans? They made 9 films together (1942-67) shown in the list below (I own 5' either as BDs or HD Amazon streamers). My favorites are probably Adams Rib & Pat & Mike; not a big fan of Guess Who..., dated now IMO - here's a RANKING that reflects my own, BUT there are a lot of different lists.

Last night I bought the HD streamer State of the Union from Amazon (not sure I've seen before?) - seems to end up in the middle of the rankings, but we enjoyed.  Ratings: 80%, Rotten Tomatoes; 3+*/4*, Leonard Maltin; 3+/4, VideoHound; 7.2/10, IMDB - directed by Frank Capra and worth a watch for a different take on their other more comedic films.  BTW, Angela Lansbury was only 23 y/o (made up to look in her 30s) and was just outstanding in the movie.  Dave :)

QuoteTracy-Hepburn Films (own in italics)
Adam's Rib (1949)
Desk Set (1957)
Guess Who's Coming to Dinner (1967)
Keeper of the Flame (1942)
Pat and Mike (1952)
Without Love (1945)
Sea of Grass (1947)
State of the Union (1948)
Woman of the Year (1942)

You know what's crazy??  Broderick looks the same as he's looked since 1980's. Voodoo I say!

Not the last film I watched but Matthew Broderick in "Glory" is excellent along with of course Denzel Washington (who won an Oscar for his role here) and Morgan Freeman and of course James Horner's tremendous score

I watched a movie that seriously messed with my head.  It is dark, violent and upsetting.  Watch only if you have the will:
