Quote from: SimonNZ on December 19, 2023, 03:58:01 PMIf you have an expectation of a local cd store (or even an online seller) that carries everything you could possibly want at all times you are simply dreaming.

I'm not "dreaming" about this, but I do (day)dream about a World where things would be like this. The availability of "best of" -compilations is good and that's where my frustrations comes from. I don't blame the sellers.

Quote from: SimonNZ on December 19, 2023, 03:58:01 PMThat has never been the case anywhere ever.

You are probably right. I believe CDs sold best around 1995. I'd say around 2000 when the internet and online stores had became a thing the availability of CDs was the best regardless of where the buyer is located. Later came streaming and vinyl (even c-cassette!) revival and CDs don't sell as well as they used to.

Quote from: SimonNZ on December 19, 2023, 03:58:01 PMRecord and cd collectors have always had lists of things they are waiting months or years of diligent checking to present themselves at a reasonable price and then get pounced on. I baffled why you think your experience should be any different.

I'm not a bild comformist like many other people are. Introvered intuition is my dominant cognitive function and that's why my head is constantly creating models of how things could and should be. Mankind could make it so that every CD is easily available if people just wanted it. Introverted feeling is my third cognitive function and it makes me feel frustration and what not whenever the World doesn't look like what my introverted intuition says it should be. Now, someone who has got a very different kind of personality type is likely to see things differently. These people are good at comforming. It is natural for them. They see the World and act in it the optimal way and that's it. I can understand such strategy, but it is difficult for me to execute it because my brain isn't build for such things. My brain is for detecting things that could be better and come up with the solution. In this case the solution is to make people in general more interested of albums on CD instead of best of -compilations. Capitalism will do the rest. More demand means more supply.

Quote from: SimonNZ on December 19, 2023, 03:58:01 PMMy experience is that I'm kept busy enough and happy enough with whatever presents itself in front of me, even if its not the very top item of my wish list.

I also have enough CDs to be kept "busy", but that's not how collectors think.

Quote from: AnotherSpin on December 19, 2023, 08:53:58 PMIn my case, streaming was the perfect answer for someone who had previously collected CDs - I was able to get rid of the mountains of plastic, at last. Wait, your time will come. And if it doesn't, that's fine too. Whatever.

Streaming is handy for sure, I use it to explore new music, but I can't let my music collection to be in the hands of third parties. I don't want to experience my favourite music disappearing just because some licenses expired and weren't renewed.

People want things for whatever rational and irrational reasons. I want CDs. It is nostalgy, traditions and the feel that something in my life stays the same (comfort/safety/etc.).

You really think you control any thing?

Nobody has any real control if the universe is 100 % deterministic (on levels more fundamental than quantum physics), but we have the illusion of control and that's the point. In my case licenses expiring in streaming services harm this illusion and that's why I rather keep collecting CDs to uphold the illusion.

Yes, it's possible to create these little pockets of order in one's world and build outwards from there 8) .

At least, the good thing is that this illusion is harmless to everyone but you. Well, almost harmless.

And, no thing stays the same, here is the seed of future discomfort.

One might be able to change reality to approach more closely the dream, or the dream to approach more closely to reality.

In order to get back to the topic I mention this: Back in the 80's I used to absolutely hate the music of the band WHAM! and for the most part still do, but I realised their hit song "Last Christmas" sounds kind of cool to me nowadays because it happens to have a strong flavour of vaporwave music. In fact, processed and slowed down versions of it are considered proper vaporwave:

Haha, occasionally; I was more of a Howard Stern & Robin kid. But gee, was radio this silly?

The Christmas Song Nat Cole (1962, Capitol)
I pick a day during the holiday season to play this classic. Then it's packed away for the next year. Nice to hear again.

If one's reality is illusory, what is the case most often, then yes, one can change illusion at will.

Very popular Christmas selection here in the States. Makes me cringe whenever I hear it play over store loudspeakers.
They should ban Careless Whisper altogether.
 ;) Whatever floats your boat.

Trying to get more into vaporwave. Someone commented on Youtube Luxury Elite's World Class is great and I am listening to it on Spotify.

MACINTOSH PLUS - Floral Shoppe - Youtube

This is considered a genre defining Vaporwave classic from 2011. In my opinion this might have felt groundbreaking when it came out, but today it is just one Vaporwave album among so many others.

desert sand feels warm at night - 0:21 - Spotify

This represents Vaporwave subgenre Slushwave which is about slowed down and heavily reverberant songs. As if Barry White tried to sing the listener into sleep.  :D This kind of music is strangely captivating, beautiful and relaxing. Since the songs are slowed down so much, they are quite long. The shortest track on this album is almost 11 minutes and the longest 24 and half minutes.

The Complete Christmas on the Ponderosa
Cast of Bonanza
Ken Darby Singers
Jimmy Joyce Children's Choir

One of the stranger Yuletide recordings I have held on to. Even though he was the shortest lived cast member, Pernell Roberts has the best singing voice, much better than Michael Landon's young crooning and Dan Blocker's blunt attempts.

This compilation also adds Lorne Greene's solo Holiday albums; his are mostly poetic recitations. Greene's handful of sung songs reminds me of Lee Marvin in Paint Your Wagon; low ranged with suspect pitch. Must be Santa is quite catchy though, as is May God Bless You.
