Buying a physical copy of that one. By the way, the booklet has a second portrait from the same angle, but with a T-shirt.

I'm on the fence.  Her Berlin Classics recordings were some of the few where I opted to spend that extra couple of bucks for high res, just to be sure I got the theoretically best sound from the label with the actual best recorded piano sound.  Alpha has been less even in that regard, so physical may be warranted.  I do know I will purchase it, one way or the other.

Something wonky has been happening with Naxos distributing lately - in addition to all the logistics/distributing issues with Warner and Decca big boxes etc.

Ondine doesn't have any new releases scheduled for July and August, but they return in September.
BIS has a disc listed for sale at Europadisc that is download only at Presto - I haven't seen it at any other major retailers (Torroba guitar music, only 47 minutes). Its summer releases have all been pushed back a few weeks.

I've also had to give up my big future releases posts because they've started adding things to the schedule in slow trickles, and a lot of the time only titles, not art/artists.

Remember, HNH International was sold to Kuke Music Holding in May.  Not saying that is related, but it might be related.

I think we can all agree that an enforceable international treaty is needed limiting the number of new harp recordings released worldwide to no more than one per quarter.

April 1st: 150th anniversary of Sergei Rachmaninov. To celebrate this event, we have chosen the hundred best pieces from our rich catalogue to highlight the genius of the Russian composer, who was deeply inspired by the great Romantics Chopin and Tchaikovsky, and whose moving music was imbued with his inner torments and his suffering from exile. All the great works (symphonies, concertos, sacred choral music, chamber works, romances, solo piano) are represented in this collection, some complete, some as extracts. Performing artists include André Previn, Hélène Grimaud, Nikolai Lugansky, Simon Rattle, Gautier Capuçon, the Choir of King's College, Natalie Dessay, Martha Argerich, Alexandre Tharaud and many more.

Quote from: Holden on June 13, 2024, 12:35:10 PMI'd have thought that HvKs 8th would have been included instead of the 7th and that the Jochum 4 would have been a better choice than the Bohm which while it is very good I (and others) feel the Jochum is better. No complaints about the wonderful Giulini 9th which sits very happily alongside my Bruno Walter. Two different takes of a great work.

Whatever permutations were available, any WP set with one conductor per symphony would be a swings and roundabouts affair I'm afraid.

Jochum didn't record the 4th with the WP as far as I know (there are live performances out there though). My own choice for WP recordings of the symphonies would have been Abbado in no 1 (from DGG, not the earlier one on Decca), Thielemann in no 2, Haitink in no 3, Böhm in 4 (Abbado is very fine too, in a less gruff, more refined way), Schuricht in 5, Stein in 6, Karajan in 7, Böhm in 8 (a criminally underrated performance) and Giulini in 9 (or Mehta, a more sanguine, passionate performance).

Wishful thinking, but a fun exercise 😁.

Ah, but did you specify which Louis XXII you meant? There are so many places that a Louis might have reigned. And the same person can be numbered differently in different places. On my trip I discovered that Philip II of Spain is also Philip I of Portugal (and anyway, his name was really Felipe).

Of course, the real problem is that it couldn't tell fact from fantasy. Just like many of the humans it is imitating...

I guess it had to happen.

One to stream unless this recording sees him going for a speedy opening movement.  There's a version on YouTube where he takes a little under 11' for the opener, which is ho hum coming from one of the great technicians out there.
