Quote from: AnotherSpin on January 12, 2026, 08:27:06 PMBut even with my limited understanding, I feel that someone like Lars von Trier isn't really trying to show life "as it is".

At the end of each episode of Riget Lars appears to say goodbye. I just watched what he says at the end of the second episode, and thought of your comment about life as it is.

Quote from: Opus131 on January 13, 2026, 07:52:35 AMAs it is customary with shows of this type, the main cast tends to be a bit weak (especially the two main leads, Holden and Naomi i didn't find either to be that interesting) but the supporting actors are consistently good.

These are some of the best.

Enjoying the final season, S3 today. Joseph Sikora is great as Bobby Egan.

I think Ashcroft is my favored so far. He also made Drummer better. I found her a bit grating at first but as soon as Ashcroft showed up they hit up and it's like the actress found her stride. The scene in the cargo bay with them trapped in that machine was great.

Avasarala was good in the beginning but over time her swearing is getting a bit annoying. I understand this is probably how the character was written in the novels but she didn't start that way and i think they are over doing it now. I mean it doesn't ruin the character or anything but i think it would have been better to keep that to a minimum so has to make it more impactful.

Amos was a surprise. I didn't know what to make of him at the start but he is turning out to be quite the complex character.

Oh, i also like Miller. Yes that hat is silly but i like the actor.

Those characters are also better in the TV show than in the books. My favorite line from the entire TV series: "I am that guy."

If you know, you know. If not, keep watching!

Yup, he's my favorite character after Drummer.

I played a video game where she was the main character, voiced by the actress. I liked it! I think she is an amalgamation of two different characters from the books (but I might be remembering wrong). And she really works in the show.

I started watching season two of The Night Manager. It's off to a cracking start!

A slightly less good rehash of Season 1, do you possibly feel?  Same basic plot, but just imposing a bit too much strain on the credulity - mine, anyway.  Having said which, it's worth watching just for the unbelievably beautiful Diego Calva  (and I'm straight).

I thought about skipping it in a fit of purism. Then I saw Olivia Colman was back and the show has the Cornwell seal of approval so I guess I'll have to watch it at some point.

Somewhat, but it's engaging enough to continue. I've only watched two episodes so far--I'll watch the 3rd tonight.

I too am struggling to get into the new season of The Night Manager. The first was so good, full of edge-of-the-seat menace and threat throughout, with Hugh Laurie a terrifying, but somehow believable, villain. As a point of contrast I'm finding Diego Calva's bad guy pretty nothing-y, in fact I'm finding most of it so really. I'll watch another episode or two to see how it goes.

I also finished season I not long ago. It was a nostalgia trip. I started watching the show "on television" later on, but saw the early episodes on syndicated re-runs.

I'd say the show improved in later seasons, became less silly and more of a social commentary. I never thought Alan Alda's goofy portrayal of Hawkeye was the best part of the show. Colonel Potter was an improvement over Colonel Blake, Major Winchester was an improvement over Major Burns, Captain Hunnicut was maybe a slight step down from Captain Macintyre, Radar O'Reilly changed. In the film there was a cynical side to him, and some of that remained in the first season, before his innocent earnestness took over.

An outstanding episode from the first season, Captain Tuttle.

Best line from the entire series (from somewhere in the middle of the series run) "Do you want to pinch it, or shall I?"

I started the latest season of Shetland.

I ran out of Tatort shows. I hope there will be more on MHz.

An Icelandic show has popped up that looks promising.

I'm starting Upstairs Downstairs, which I haven't seen in many years, perhaps decades. The cast is phenomenal.
