Phew. Now I just have to figure out for the sake of that Haydn poll (or my own sanity), which of my top 7 become my top 3.

Guess I'll just have to listen to 93, 96, 97, 98, 99, 102 and 103 again...

Brahms: German Requiem [Rattle]....





This is a very sensitive reading from Rattle; it sounds like one is genuinely mourning a bereavement. The orchestral forces seem somehow lighter than other versions but not in a bad way. It is like Rattle is letting the chorus take the full weight of responsibility for the performance. This they certainly do with wonderful singing and once again I really like the balance/texture of the chorus. I have always like this version.

Heck, there would be far worse fates than listening to the bottom 7 from this run-through. There isn't a bad piece among them (symphonies 82-104), it was just a question of separating the pleasant from the truly moving. Purely subjective of course, but I certainly wouldn't object to hearing any of the "Paris" symphonies for example even though none of them quite made the cut.

Andrea Lucchesini plays the very dramatic Berio sonata. A half hour long coherent sweep in which this poor little b flat tries to  overcome a bunch of very nasty attacks by the other notes on the piano.
