Don't know should this be here or on diner but anyway. Let's play a bit silly game, perhaps already familiar from other message boards.
Basically you give one plus (+) point and one minus (-) point to a composer of your choice. One vote per day. Every composer starts with +5 points and after 0 points composer will be eliminated. I've chosen 20 composers for the first round. Many important and favourite composers are missing, perhaps they'll be on the next rounds... :)

He is one composer I never could get into for some reason, as much as I accept his greatness in the canon. The works I have of him, 8th and 9th symphonies, the cello concerto, the piano concerto, the piano quintets they all have that sense of predictability to them. Brahms generally has that too, but his sound pallette and melodies make up for it IMO.
Having said that I realize I have not heard his SQs or the earlier symphonies

Yes, and at some point the rules need to be changed so you can only take away points from one composer without adding points to another. Otherwise this game will never end.

What happens when a composer is eliminated?
A game i saw in another forum, was everytime a composer was eliminated, the person who "kills" him has to put another composer in his place.
When a composer reaches a certain number of points(30points for instance) he goes to the hall of fame so to speak.

Handel is dead!!! ;D
What happens when a composer is eliminated?
A game i saw in another forum, was everytime a composer was eliminated, the person who "kills" him has to put another composer in his place.
When a composer reaches a certain number of points(30points for instance) he goes to the hall of fame so to speak.
It's more fun that way imo.
YEAH!
Start a new thread, I am so there, dude! :)

We can save our votes? I thought only one vote per day, and if you do not use it, you lose it ;D...that way it reacting to others is a bigger part of the game.

Ok, let's do it in this thread.
So the rules:
1- one vote a day.
2- Once a composer reaches 30 points(less or more, lets decide) he goes to the hall of fame, and another composer enters the competition.
3. Once a composer is eliminated, goes to hell! and a new composer enters competition.
4. The last person to vote for the elimination or for the hall of fame is the one who enters the new composer.
GO!

Rather than hijacking Siedler's game already in progress, why don't we wait until the next round (or start a new thread), and let the current game play out? Plus, it would get rather confusing to have those who eliminated composers previously entering their new composers at a later time. Just a suggestion. :)

There is (was?) a feature that, when you are composing a new post, will stop you when you say "post" if anything has been posted in the meantime, and let you review it first. It was ON by default on the old forum, and it is OFF by default on this version. This might be a useful time for that feature to be (individually) enabled. :)

I see Handel has been eliminated whereas Haydn positively flourishes. That seems a mystery to me, I would have assumed they would stay pretty much neck and neck.
That's what the
Handel & Haydn Society (http://www.handelandhaydn.org/) was thinking, too,
Mike!
Lilas Pastia's post confused me, so I'll take it from ChamberNut.

Indeed it is, because I wanna keep everyone but Berg in there, and people just keep plussing Berg back into action, and even if he does get the boot I won't want to award minuses and then my soul will be torn into tiny shreds as Tchaikovsky, Dvorak, and Chopin are mercilessly shown the door, and I will regret the day I ever stepped into this thread. :(

I am not sure about this business of encouraging spouses to come along and vote here. My mother's dog probably has opinions on these composers; for that matter Gurn has a whole pack of dogs that would be yapping for votes.
Can anyone highlight for me if there is any point to this exercise? I am assuming it is harmless fun, except that certain favourites of mine have been eliminated and I have noted who to blame and I have a friend in Boston who will deal with the Wiseguys. It will be bam, boom, there....gone.....forgetabourit.
Some members will have been removed. You know what I mean.

Schubert? Certainly. In fact, if you divide the number of their published works by the average number of annual performances and multiply the result by the average number of parts per score, raised to the power equal to their respective numbers of musical progeny over the mean number of repeats per composition times modulations, you will find that Bach was exactly 2.3796 times better than Schubert.
As for Mozart...

Since then, Lauren has voted twice:

Lauren's:
Mahler 7-1=6
Mozart 8+1=9
and

And Lauren's:
Mahler 3-1=2

So, unless I am missing something, two votes for Mahler should be added and two votes for Mozart subtracted:

Hey,
Bill, Siedler has stated earlier in this thread that he wishes only members to vote. :) I think you may have missed his post earlier in the thread. I corrected a few of Lauren's susequent votes, but I think you missed that post as well.
So the current count needs to be adjusted:

Yes, I did miss that. Too bad, she was having fun with this...which I thought was the point at the outset. No worries. She can
have persuade my vote each day as her taste in music is superior to mine anyways. :) I will do the Hall of Fame one.
Has anyone else wondered if "Composer elimination" is related to the following?

A poll without WAGNER and VERDI and worst yet Mahler and Haydn ahead of Mozart and Schubert....oh dear God.... I am beginning to have serious doubts about the musical tastes of some of the GMG members. And where is Tchaikovsky in all this??
Mahler ahead of Wagner ::), wasn't it Mahler that said that "there was only Beethoven and Wagner..." I don't even think he (Mahler) would have dared put himself ahead of the Meistersinger!

Oh please isn't it obvious, this poll is headed for a J.S. Bach vs. Beethoven finale which should please Don for the moment. The final result, much like that other Bach vs. Beethoven thread we had earlier will not be to Don's liking I'm afraid.

For sure I would not want to cheat poor Anton but I thought I left him alone and added one to Schubert. I should have totaled yours to make 2 for Anton, right?
I will wait for your reply so we don't mess up this thread.

Bach should be at 14, not 15 (the rule is we can add 1, but subtract 2; someone with calculated deliberation added 2 to JSB).
So let it be written.
So let it be done.

I'm the one who added 2 to Bach, but not with calculated deliberation. I just wasn't aware that the parameters of the game had changed. No big deal, and I don't apologize.

That's more like taking Moses out of the Bible. Or God himself.

Joyce is a genuine new member and it would be good if we could encourage this brand spanking new member to post elsewhere and provide a welcome.

Of course. 0:)
I couldn't get into this game, but I'm shocked about Brahms over Mozart. Really shocked.
Hey guys, at this point, the choice is purely arbitrary.

Mozart may be the better composer by whichever standard you want to take, but in the end it comes to who do I listen to more? Neither, nowadays, really ;D but in general it is Brahms that I'd pick up from a library if it consisted solely of these two composers. But against Bach he does not stand a chance of course >:D

Really?I am a huge admirer of Brahms' Piano Concerto in Dm, as well as his last String Quartet und Deutsches Requiem. But Mozart...
Guess I
am weird...
Go Brahms, Go! 8)
J.S. Bach 6 + 1 = 7
Brahms 5 - 2 = 3
J.S. Bach 7 - 2 = 5
Brahms 3 + 1 = 4
J.S. Bach 3 -
Brahms 5 +

Weird for liking Mozart? ;D
The period does not resonate with me that much, perhaps it will in the future.

Who would have guessed it?! Least of all Johannes Brahms himself, who revered his great predecessors... :o
YES!!!!
Brahms?
Really?
Yick.
boooo
Awesome!
Not my pick from the 20 to begin with, but he was after Mahler was eliminated.
Very interesting little game this, anyway. From the beginning, I was sure it would come out Bach/Beethoven.
So the winner is: Brahms! ;D
Should we do another round or lock this thread as there are the hall of fame and the lesser composer games out?

One game is enough for me, Siedler...
What about a game with 20 symphonies? Or 20 string quartets?

That sounds fun.
Fair play to old Brahms, but Bach is THE man, no?

Interesting idea ....... start with 20 symphonies, and eliminate all but 1 ......... The problem is arriving at the initial 20 symphonies .........

Maybe a Hall of Fame format is in order.
Well that offers endless possiblities...one round with all Mahler symphonies, next with Beethoven then 10 well-known symphonies from major composers etc. 0:)

Help! That's too much elimination for me. I prefer BOTH-AND to EITHER-OR.
So, count me out. But - good luck!
